The 17 Most Underrated Travel Destinations

I’ve been to some big cities that I absolutely love like New York, Paris, and London, but there are plenty of amazing underrated spots out there. There are some places around the world that deserve way more attention because they are awesome places to visit! 

1. Langkawi Island, Malaysia

Langkawi is an archipelago of 99 islands all surrounding the main island. Langkawi has gorgeous beaches that are great for swimming and relaxing as well as tons of jungle space for adventure and beautiful scenery. I’d recommend one of the zip line tours and trying the Langkawi cable car.

2. Lake Bled, Slovenia 

Lake Bled is about an hour outside of Ljubljana Slovenia and is an adorable little lake town. There are plenty of activities around the area including kayaking, zip lining, and hiking. During the summer it’s great for swimming and outdoor activities and in winter the snowy scenery and quiet landscape make for a great nature escape.

3. Cesky Krumlov, Czech Republic 

While many people opt to check out the great city of Prague, not too far away in the Czech countryside is the fairytale-esque town of Cesky Krumlov. It’s a great small town to walk around and take in the local culture.

4. Chiang Mai, Thailand 

Chiang Mai is a smaller city in Northern Thailand that tends to get less attention than Bangkok and the tropical areas of Thailand. It’s got a lot of amazing architecture with beautiful temples all around and is a great place to explore Thai culture.

5. Longboat Key Florida 

Directly north of Siesta Key Florida is the quieter town of Longboat Key. Longboat Key is a long stretch of beautiful beaches and quiet condos. It’s great for a relaxing beach getaway, still close enough to shops and restaurants in nearby Lido Key. 


6. Swansea, Wales  

Swansea has a great little downtown area and beautiful cliff walks all along the coastline. There are some great beaches to walk around and tons of farm land along the area. You can spot sheep along the way as you drive through the beaches. 

7. Reykjavik, Iceland 

Reykjavik is an often overlooked European city. If you want something different than London or Paris opt for this great Icelandic city instead. Reykjavik is up and coming and trendy and has a great going out scene. The bars and restaurants are super fun to check out and there are plenty of amazing day trips from Reykjavik to gorgeous Icelandic scenery. You can also take a short boat ride to the Snæfellsnes Peninsula to see some puffins! 

8. Palawan, the Phillipines 

The province of Palawan is an archipelago located southwest of Manila. Palawan is a gorgeous destination for amazing island hopping, swimming and boat rides. The clear blue water makes for great snorkeling as well. 

9. Doha, Qatar 

Doha is the amazing capital city of Qatar located on the Persian Gulf. Doha is also the most populous city in Qatar and has lots of amazing architecture and fun thigns to check out including outdoor markets and art musuems.

10. Granada, Spain 

If you want something different than Barcelona and Madrid, try heading to Granada Spain instead. Granada is located in the mountainous southern region of Andalusia. Granada boasts tons of culture and amazing old architecture.

11. Monteverde, Costa Rica 

Monteverde is one of Costa Rica’s major ecotourism destinations. This destination is perfect for nature lovers. You can check out adventure activities, enjoy tons of trails, and splash in some waterfalls in the rainforest. It’s the perfect place to check out a diverse landscape.

12. Interlaken, Switzerland 

While not as large as Zurich and Lucerne, Interlaken is a really cute city in the mountains of Switzerland. Interlaken has amazing views and local restaurants with great Swiss cheese and chocolate. It’s a great destination for adventure seekers looking to skydive or paraglide.

13. Ghent, Belgium 

Not too far outside Brussels is the adorable city of Ghent. Ghent has amazing medieval architectural influences and of course Belgian waffles and chocolate.

14. The Berkshires, Massachusetts

The Berkshires is a great weekend getaway into the countryside. During fall the views are amazing as the leaves change. There are tons of cute small towns to check out in the Berkshires as well as great outdoor activities and natural scenery.

15. Asheville, North Carolina 

Another small town with amazing outdoor scenery is Asheville. It resides along North Carolina’s Blue Ridge Mountains. The downtown arts district is a fun place to walk around as well as all the amazing trails along the roads. 

16. Zanzibar, Tanzania 

Zanzibar has some of the most beautiful beaches in the world. It is located off the coast of Tanzania in the Indian Ocean. It consists of many small islands and two main ones that combine to create amazing coastlines.

17. Dresden, Germany 

Dresden is less popular than Berlin and Munich but has a lot of great history and culture. Dresden was almost completely rebuilt after extensive bombing during WWII. It’s a great place to enjoy history and culture combined with modern cafes.
