Langkawi, Malaysia is a newly popular tropical destination off the coast of mainland Malaysia. Langkawi is an archipelago made up of 99 islands in the Andaman Sea. It boasts gorgeous beaches, clear blue water, and tons of fun activities.
Langkawi is a great tropical destination with a lot of fun things to do!
For my trip, I went in early June and stayed for about four days. Flying in to Langkawi was a bit difficult because we couldn’t get non-stop flights for the days we were going and had to do layovers from Thailand to Langkawi and then another layover when we were leaving from Langkawi to Bali.
We packed a lot into four days which was doable because Langkawi is a fairly small island and you can drive all over pretty quickly. A lot of tourists will rent motor bikes which is convenient if you feel comfortable driving them. We had never driven one before and opted to use Grab instead, which is similar to Uber and very easy to use!
We stayed in a really cute homestay style airbnb near Kuah beach which had a great view and was a bit out of the touristy areas.
Here are some of the best things you can do while in Langkawi!
1. Ride the Langkawi Cable Car
Langkawi has a huge cable car that climbs to the top of a mountain where you can get off and walk along a skybridge. The views going up are amazing and definitely not for those with a fear of heights! The ticket package also includes entrance to a 3D art museum.
2. Take a Jet Ski Tour to other islands
We wanted to do a boat tour instead but there weren’t enough people so we ended up with a jet ski tour and loved it! We met the our guide at Cenang Beach and got a brief lesson on how to work the jet ski.
We went to a small island first and snorkeled off the edge of a pier nearby. There were a ton of monkeys at this beach lurking around and attempting to steal people’s bags so be careful of monkey thieves on the beaches.
On top of that we got to go to Hawk Island where our guide brought food to throw in the water and we got to take a video of the hawks diving in the water to go get it. Lastly, we got a picnic lunch on a private island which was a perfect way to end the tour.
3. Soak up the sun on the beach
Langkawi has gorgeous beaches including Tanjung Rhu and Pantai Cenang which are definitely worth seeing. It was extremely hot when we went so we couldn’t stay too long in one place but we enjoyed just getting to see them for a bit.
4. Try the local cuisine
Malaysia is known for its unique fried rice which is worth trying. On top of that there are tons of traditional Malaysian restaurants in Langkawi to try dishes like apam balik and nasi lemak.
5. Zip Line through the Jungle
We booked a Zip Line last minute and thought it was a really cool way to see inside the jungle and even take in some waterfalls along the way. The lines themselves are pretty high up but not too steep of a slope, making for great views without being too scary!
6. Check out Eagle Square in Kuah
Langkawi is known for its eagle population and the town of Kuah pays tribute to that with a giant eagle statue right by the coast. You can head over and check this out while walking around the town of Kuah.
7. Have dinner on the beach at the Westin
We stayed pretty close to the Westin Hotel and decided to check out one of its restaurants for dinner one night. The hotel itself is on the beach and the outdoor restaurant makes for great views while eating.
